Kaylie's Barbie Castle

Our little girl, Kaylie, is four, and like any four year old, in love with the Disney Princesses. When a certain giant retailer started selling the Princess barbie castle, it immediately went to the top of her wish list. However, it was not in the budget this year, so I got the brilliant idea to build a dollhouse/castle myself. It is by no means professional, but it hardly cost us anything. I took an old bookshelf and made it into this:

We measured to make sure that all of the Princesses would be able to stand up tall and not hit the ceilings. :) The bottom level is for the hot pink Ford Mustang that the Princesses will be getting shortly. Luckies. :D

The upstairs is the bedroom - no the bed is not quite big enough, but it was too cute and only $1 at the D.I. She hasn't said anything, so I assume it's okay for her, too.  :D The wallpaper is fancy textured scrapbook paper.

Downstairs is the living area - bookshelf, comfy couch and a crackling fire. And of course, a flat panel tv to watch all the "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" a girl can handle! :D

It's a little cheesy, but I printed out these patterns for the garage floor and the rooftop - just to add some visual interest. I think they're awesome! :D

And finally, my artist of a husband painted the sides to look like a castle. Overall, I am pleased. I'm sure she would've been giddy over the plastic castle, but this one is sturdy and made with love, so I like it better. Oh, and did I mention cheap? The entire thing was under $25. :) And that makes me really happy!

Oh my goodness, Jenn, that is adorable! I seriously might have to steal the idea and make one for my girls! I actually love the bookshelf idea because it doesn't take up as much awkward space as an actual dollhouse! Cute cute!!

I love this!! I have been searching the internet for a Barbie castle made from a bookcase and I am so glad I found your site. Where did you get the furniture or do you have any ideas of cheap furniture? I am crafty, but cheap so if I can make it or buy it cheap I would prefer it... but I am at a loss for filling the castle with cute stuff. Again, your castle is adorable and I got some great ideas from your photos for my girls. Thank you! :)
